Madurai high court gives justice to the people in the higher level. Entry pass is mandatory for all the petitioners, responders, witness and case related personnel. Huge car parking area and separate canteen are available.

I am very pleased with the court's judgment in the Sathankulam custodial death case. It is heartening to see the nine police officers being awarded the death sentence for their brutal actions. This kind of strict accountability should be applied across the entire country. Far too many police officers are corrupt and act with excessive ego and arrogance. Strong punishments like this can serve as a powerful deterrent and help restore public faith in the system.

Established in 2004, the court is a boon to the people in thirteen southern districts of Tamil Nadu. The bench has Kanyakumari, Tirunelveli, Tuticorin, Madurai, Dindigul, Ramanathapuram, Virudhunagar, Theni, Sivaganga, Pudukottai, Tanjore, Tiruchi and Karur districts under its jurisdiction. The sprawling 107-acre campus is one of the largest court campuses in the country and the spacious four-storey administrative building attracts hundreds of litigants every day. The court complex has 12 court halls, furnished on the model of the court halls in the Supreme Court, the Delhi and the Madras High Courts. The court, since its inauguration on 24 July 2004, has perked up the legal process in the southern districts and has cultivated a large number of social activists, who vouch for the interest of the public though their public interest litigations.

The Madurai Bench of the Madras High Court was inaugurated on 24 July 2004 to serve the people of thirteen southern districts of Tamil Nadu, namely Kanyakumari, Tirunelveli, Tuticorin, Madurai, Dindigul, Ramanathapuram, Virudhunagar, Theni, Sivaganga, Pudukottai, Tanjore, Tiruchi, and Karur. The bench was established to reduce the travel time and distance for residents of the southern districts who previously had to travel to Chennai for legal proceedings. Located on the outskirts of Madurai city along the Chennai-Madurai NH (3 km from the highway), the sprawling 107 acre campus is one of the largest court complexes in the country. It features a Ground plus three floors containing administrative office and twelve court halls designed on the model of the Supreme Court, Delhi High Court, and Madras High Court. While the ground floor consists of office spaces, the courtrooms are situated on the upper three floors. The campus includes separate entrances and exits, high-security measures, and a controlled environment under the surveillance of CISF personnel. The infrastructure includes parking facilities for two-wheelers and four-wheelers, as well as essential amenities such as an Indian Bank branch, a post office, and a fire station at the entrance. A police station is also located within the premises. Advocate chambers, two canteens (for advocates and staff), and multiple shops, including a law bookshop, lawyer's stationery, Xerox centers, tea and juice shops, and a railway ticket booking counter, are also available. The campus is known for its green environment with a variety of trees, plants, and frequent sightings of peacocks and other birds. However, there are no resting benches or sitting areas for visitors, making waiting inconvenient. Entry to the court premises is restricted to individuals with valid reasons or passes, while general access only to the campus is allowed. The court has streamlined the legal process in the southern districts since its inception and has fostered a community of social activists engaged in public interest litigations. The Madurai Bench stands as a symbol of efficient administration and majestic architecture, providing significant contribution to the legal infrastructure of Tamil Nadu.
